All this urge, this drive that was ignited at that moment during my childhood, has never left me. Somehow, this brought me to the mountains in Virginia where salvaged, beautiful hardwoods took my fancy. I’ve been a custom furniture maker now for almost 15 years, and I love it.
I’ve realized that for me, the scaffold of a formal art education wasn’t necessary. Even without that, discovering something in your mind and creating it in the so-called real world is what we all do, to some degree or other. Some of us just lend more credence to it, or are better at it, or give it more room in our lives. This, for me, is what “spirituality” is. The degree to which I give my energy to this work is the long, slow burn of life; it’s what makes living worthwhile.
