That bowl was made from a maple tree being cut up for firewood in a yard in Galax, VA. I saw it on my way to town. I stopped and got them to give the tree to me. It was heavily burled and had some rot, but I saw beauty in there. The bowl comes from a lot of 75 bowls I turned out of pieces of ‘firewood’ already cut. Because the wood was not cut right the orientation of the bowls in the wood is usually not ‘right’ for turning, but I turned them anyway and the distortions are odd because of that. There was such a variety of different pieces that came out of the tree it amazed me. 75 bowls were turned from the odd bits of ‘firewood’ that fell off my truck onto the grass when unloading the bigger pieces. There is easily enough wood to turn several hundred more bowls from the branches of this lone tree.
